Cal Drummond
Calvin Troy Drummond, known as Cal Drummond (June 29, 1917 – May 3, 1970), was an American League baseball umpire from 1960 to 1969. He was born in Ninety Six, South Carolina, and attended the Al Somers Umpire School. In his 10-year MLB career, he umpired 1,357 games, including the 1966 World Series and the 1961 All-Star Game. His brother, John W. Drummond, served as a South Carolina state senator from 1966 to 2008. Drummond was struck in the head by a foul ball in 1969 and had surgery to remove a blood clot, leaving him unconscious for about two weeks. Merle Anthony replaced him in the AL. He attempted a return in May 1970 with the Class AAA American Association in Des Moines, but after reporting dizziness he collapsed in the dugout and died early on May 3, 1970, from a cerebral infarction (a stroke). He was married to Elizabeth since 1938.
