Cairanne AOC
Cairanne AOC is a wine region in the southern Rhône Valley of France, in the commune of Cairanne in the Vaucluse department. It produces red and white wines from grape varieties including Grenache noir, Grenache blanc, Syrah, and Clairette. The area covers about 760 hectares (1,900 acres) of vineyards and experiences a Mediterranean climate.
History and status: Cairanne was originally part of the Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Cairanne. The label Côtes-du-Rhône Cairanne was used from 1953, and it became Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages Cairanne in 1967. Cairanne gained its own AOC status provisionally on 20 June 2016 and definitively on 25 June 2018.
In the 15th century, about 40 hectares were planted. Cairanne was one of five communes highlighted as strong candidates for a dedicated Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages appellation.
