Broek in Waterland is an 1889 oil painting by Dutch-Indonesian artist Jan Toorop. It shows the Dutch village of Broek in Waterland at twilight using a pointillist technique. Toorop, influenced by Seurat, helped popularize Dutch Neo-Impressionism, though he often mixed his own color ideas. The scene has a strong geometric feel with diagonal canals and bare pollard willows, contrasted by ribbons of rosy sunset against deep blues and greens. The painting may reflect Toorop’s empathy for working people. He visited Broek in Waterland in February 1889 with Belgian critic Emile Verhaeren. The work measures 69 cm by 76 cm, oil on canvas, and is now in the Indianapolis Museum of Art (Robert H. & Ina M. Mohlman Gallery, 2002.156), a gift in memory of Robert S. Ashby.
