Break 'Em All
Break 'Em All is a Breakout-style game for the Nintendo DS. It’s known as Brick 'Em All DS in Europe. It released in Japan on October 27, 2005, in North America on June 20, 2006, and in Europe on September 29, 2006. The game supports single-player and multiplayer for up to eight players on one cart. You use the DS touch screen to move the paddle and activate power-ups, which you can trigger by pressing Up on the D-Pad or the X button.
Tokoton mode has two options: Standard Play and Random Play. Standard Play has 50 stages, and you gain levels as you go, starting at “amoeba” and advancing to “superior being.” Random Play creates levels randomly, with over 3,000,000 possible combinations. Tokoton starts with three lives and lets you earn more.
Quest Mode has 12 levels. Each level has three regular stages and one boss stage that requires hitting a weak point to defeat. Quest Mode can be played in multiplayer with up to four players via DS Download Play; the host picks the stage and the fastest player to complete it wins.
Survival Mode is the multiplayer option for up to eight players. Players pick one of four unique paddles. Instead of the usual brick-breaking goal, you defend a central core that changes from green to yellow to red and can be destroyed. A “Lucky Ball” can appear to grant invincibility to the first player who hits it, then changes to a “Life Ball” that restores the core to green. The last player with a green core wins.
The Japanese version includes a backlight on/off option that isn’t in the Western releases. The game has a 68/100 at Metacritic and a 23/40 from Weekly Famitsu.
