Bleeding milkcap
Bleeding milkcap is the common name for at least two mushrooms in the Lactarius genus. The main feature is that they leak a milky liquid (latex) when the flesh is cut, and the latex reddens quickly, giving a “bleeding” appearance. The two well-known types are Lactarius sanguifluus and Lactarius rubrilacteus. They grow in forests, often under conifers or hardwood trees, and form a natural link with the trees they grow near. Because these mushrooms can look similar to other species and some can upset the stomach if eaten, use extreme care. Do not eat wild mushrooms unless you are sure of the identification and have guidance from an expert.
