Billy Tjampitjinpa Kenda, commonly Billy Kenda (born about 1967), is an Australian Pitjantjatjara and Luritja artist who has a disability. He works with Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists in Alice Springs. He was born in Jay Creek near Alice Springs in the West MacDonnell Ranges, and his connection to the land shows in his paintings. He learned to paint from his grandfather and his mother, and began painting for Bindi Mwerre in 2004, developing a bold, graphic style. He often includes trucks, cars, airplanes and helicopters in his work, inspired by the growing population and traffic in Central Australia, and he also paints scenes from remote communities and town camps. His art is playful and evocative, capturing unique Central Australian life. He has exhibited with Bindi Mwerre, as well as at Desert Mob and the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair. In 2014 he was featured in Artbank’s Loose Canon, and Artbank holds his 2013 painting A busy day in Central Australia. Two of his works hang on the outside walls of the Alice Springs Public Library—All Them Tourists Goin’ to Look at Countryside and Lookin’ Through Gap at Alice Springs Town—installed in 2020 with Arts NT funding, and together they span 22 metres.
