Bergera
Bergera is a small genus of flowering plants in the citrus family (Rutaceae). It has sometimes been treated as part of the genus Murraya (as Murraya sect. Bergera). The best-known species is the curry tree, Bergera koenigii. Bergera plants are native from India through Southeast Asia to China and Taiwan, and extend south to Malesia and New Caledonia.
Taxonomic history:
- The genus name Bergera was published by Johann Gerhard König in 1771.
- For many years it was considered a separate genus, but later was merged with Murraya.
- In 1986, Paul P.-H. But and colleagues proposed a group within Murraya called M. sect. Bergera based on chemical evidence.
- Pollen studies in 2009 and molecular phylogenetics in 2017 supported treating Bergera as a separate group again.
- A 2021 Rutaceae classification, based on a major molecular study, recognizes Bergera as its own genus.
Current status:
- As of 2023, Plants of the World Online accepts Bergera as a genus but lists only one species, Bergera koenigii. Other species that might belong to Bergera are usually placed in Murraya.
- The genus is said to contain ten or more species, though many are treated under Murraya in modern classifications.
- Some Murraya species may be placed in M. sect. Bergera, depending on the treatment.
