Being as an Ocean (album)
Being as an Ocean is the third full-length studio album by the American post-hardcore band Being as an Ocean. It was released on June 30, 2015, through InVogue Records internationally and Impericon in Europe. The album runs 39 minutes and 34 seconds. It features Michael McGough as clean vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the second time, and it is the last album to include drummer Connor Denis.
Musical style and themes
The record blends post-hardcore with melodic hardcore, delivering a tighter, more direct sound while still carrying the band’s emotional intensity. Lyrically, it deals with personal struggle, forgiveness, love, and faith. The first track, Little Richie, is based on the story of Joel Quartuccio’s friend Rich McCullen, who endured an abusive upbringing but chose forgiveness and compassion.
Reception
Critics generally gave positive reviews. New Noise Magazine awarded it 4 out of 5 stars, praising its focused emotion and unified sound. GIGsoup highlighted the band’s avoidance of genre clichés and strong vocal performances.
