Uncaged: Faces of Sigil is a 1996 accessory for the 2nd edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, published by TSR. It collects 41 detailed non-player characters for the Planescape setting, plus 15 shorter NPCs that can fit into any Planescape campaign. Each character entry includes their game statistics at the end and is presented in different styles, such as straightforward bios, interviews, or playful self-introductions.

In Arcane magazine, Trenton Webb gave it 9 out of 10. He praised how the book fills Sigil’s streets with a varied cast of heroes, villains, and eccentrics. The characters are not just stereotypes; they’re richly described and connected so meeting one leads to others, creating ongoing plot threads. The book balances information with storytelling, making it easy for referees to run scenes, even when players improvise.

Webb notes that the NPCs’ stats are exactly where you’d expect—at the end of each entry—while the descriptions help players know how to roleplay them. He says the book offers strong potential for great roleplaying and for launching adventures beyond Sigil. Uncaged helps turn Sigil from a place where campaigns start into a living city where people and plots matter. In Planescape terms, you may need a portal key to leave Sigil, but Uncaged provides the keys for referees to access Sigil’s heart.
