Beatrice Forbes Manz
Beatrice Forbes Manz is an American historian who studies the Middle East and Central Asia, focusing on nomads and the Timurid dynasty. She is a history professor at Tufts University. Her 1989 book The Rise and Rule of Tamerlane is a key work on the conqueror Timur.
She earned a BA from Harvard in 1970, an MA in Middle Eastern studies from the University of Michigan in 1974, and a PhD from Harvard in Inner Asian and Altaic studies in 1983.
She is a fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society and, as of 2014, was president of the American Institute of Iranian Studies. She is the daughter of William H. Forbes and the renowned endocrinologist Anne Pappenheimer Forbes.
Her publications include books and numerous articles, with her notable book being The Rise and Rule of Tamerlane. She speaks English, French, German, Russian, Persian, Turkish, and Arabic.
