Barry Sandler
Barry Sandler, born February 23, 1947 in Buffalo, New York, is an American screenwriter and film producer. He had a long career, especially in the 1980s. Openly gay, he is best known for writing the 1982 film Making Love, the first mainstream Hollywood movie to address homosexuality and coming out in a serious way. He discussed Making Love in the 1995 documentary The Celluloid Closet. Besides writing, he teaches screenwriting at the University of Central Florida and is an artistic director at Outfest, a LGBTQ film festival in Los Angeles. He has won a GLAAD Media Award and the Outfest 2002 Gay Pioneer Award for Courage and Artistry, and The Advocate named him one of the most influential gay artists in America.
