Dutch FilmWorks
Dutch FilmWorks B.V. is a Dutch film distributor and publisher based in Utrecht. Founded in 1998, it handles Benelux rights (the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg) for many films and releases them in theaters, on DVD, Blu-ray and streaming. It also publishes books and magazines and has released CBS library TV series on DVD under license from CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Pictures.
In 2022, StudioCanal bought a majority stake in Dutch FilmWorks, making it part of StudioCanal’s European group. Dutch FilmWorks has a catalog of more than 2,500 titles, including Exorcist: The Prequel, The Grudge, The Aviator, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, The Final Cut, Saw, and Dutch titles like Westenwind and 06/05.
The House of Knowledge distributes documentaries (from Discovery Channel), and Moefieklub distributed children’s films and TV shows (started in 2005 and ended in the early 2010s).
DFW helped found Benelux Film Distributors in 2005 with Inspire Pictures and Lumière to distribute films theatrically; it left BFD in 2011 to start its own theatrical unit in 2012.
In 2017, Dutch FilmWorks asked the Dutch Data Protection Authority to allow cooperation with internet providers to curb piracy by linking IP addresses to infringing users. A draft ruling was published and, after public comments, a decision followed. In 2019 a Ziggo lawsuit against DFW was dismissed; the court ruled that Ziggo did not have to reveal customer names and addresses due to privacy concerns.
