Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (soundtrack)
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the film score for the 2003 movie directed by Jonathan Mostow. Composer Marco Beltrami created a mostly orchestral score, replacing the series’ original composer Brad Fiedel. Fiedel’s main theme isn’t used in the score, though an updated version appears in the film’s end credits.
Beltrami was chosen after a period of doubt about who would score the film. He built new themes and aimed for a complete orchestral sound, while still nodding to Fiedel’s work. He used a lot of synthesizers as well, but he primarily wrote for an orchestra to reflect the characters’ emotions and the movie’s action. The score was created after Christmas 2002 and recorded with a 94‑piece orchestra, a 30‑voice choir, and 13 percussionists.
The soundtrack was released by Varèse Sarabande on July 1, 2003. About 85 minutes of music were recorded for the film, and roughly 45–50 minutes made it into the final score. The project involved a mix of action cues and quieter moments, with Mostow encouraging a larger orchestral sound that could carry the human drama as well as the machine danger.
Critical reception was mixed. Some reviewers praised Beltrami’s professional orchestral work and highlighted standout tracks, while others felt the score was a bit muddled or lacked a distinctive voice. Overall, it was seen as a solid, accessible shift from the earlier electronic scores, with a strong focus on action and emotion. All music was composed by Marco Beltrami, except for two pieces: “The Terminator” and “I Told You.”
