Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021
Australia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with the song “Technicolour,” written by Montaigne and Dave Hammer and performed by Montaigne. The entry was selected internally by SBS. Montaigne had been planned to compete in 2020 with “Don’t Break Me” before the contest was canceled. “Technicolour” premiered on 4 March 2021.
Australia first joined Eurovision in 2015 as a special guest for the 60th anniversary and began competing regularly from 2016, needing to qualify from the semi-finals to reach the final.
In 2021, Australia competed in the first semi-final, performing 5th. The song did not place in the top 10, finishing 14th, and Australia failed to qualify for the final—its first time missing the final since debut.
Because of COVID-19 travel restrictions, the Australian entry was performed via a live-on-tape recording filmed in Sydney, rather than traveling to Rotterdam and undergoing quarantine on return.
“Technicolour” emphasizes resilience, vulnerability, and solidarity—the idea that we are stronger when we ask for help and come together. The song was released digitally on 5 March 2021, after its premiere on 4 March, and Montaigne performed it live at the Sydney Mardi Gras on 6 March 2021.
