Rudolf Capell (January 24, 1635 – April 24, 1684) was a German historian, linguist, and teacher. He was born in Hamburg, the son of the pastor Jodocus Capell. He studied at the University of Wittenberg and the University of Giessen, earning the degree of Magister in 1656. In 1660 he became Professor of Rhetoric at the Akademisches Gymnasium in Hamburg, and in 1675 he was made Professor of History and Greek.

Capell wrote about 97 works on history and language. He was married to Anna Berenberg (1639–1669). Their daughter Christina Adelheid Capell (1663–1730) married the Hamburg and Lisbon merchant Paul Amsinck (1649–1706). Capell was known internationally as one of the great learned men of his time.
