Atomic People
Atomic People is a 2024 British television film about Hibakusha, the survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It premiered on BBC Two on 31 July 2024 and uses interviews and archival footage to share the survivors’ lives and memories. Commissioned by BBC Two in 2023 as part of a season marking 80 years since the end of World War II, the film has been praised for its intimate survivor testimonies and thoughtful treatment of nuclear history. The Telegraph called it “the most devastating documentary you will watch this year,” and The Guardian highlighted it as a standout in that week’s programming.
Atomic People won the British Academy Television Award for Best Specialist Factual at the 2025 BAFTA Television Awards and received the Special Jury Prize at the 2025 Venice TV Awards.
