Asōfuji Seiya
Asōfuji Seiya, born Kiyotoshi Suginomori on January 17, 1976, in Fukaura, Aomori, Japan, is a former sumo wrestler. He is the older brother of Aminishiki. He stood about 1.80 meters tall and weighed around 125 kg. He joined the Ajigawa stable in 1994, led by former yokozuna Asahifuji, who was a cousin of his father. Because he was relatively light for a sumo wrestler—about 100 kg early in his career—his rise through the ranks took longer.
He first reached the jūryō division in September 2003, but dropped back to the makushita division after one tournament. He returned to jūryō a year later and finally made his top division debut in November 2006 at age 30, the ninth oldest makuuchi debutant since WWII. In his top division debut he went 6-9. His time in the top division was limited; he spent most of his career in jūryō and never won more than about nine matches in a tournament.
In April 2011, Asōfuji was among 23 wrestlers found guilty of fixing bout results and was ordered to retire. He submitted his retirement papers on April 4, 2011, and his retirement ceremony was held on May 29, 2011 at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan. After retirement he worked as a trainer for Isegahama stable and, as of 2022, worked as a manager for an industrial waste disposal company. He had married in December 2006.
Asōfuji favored throwing techniques, especially uwatedashinage (pulling outer-arm throw) and shitatenage (inner-arm throw).
