Arthur Henfrey (footballer)
Arthur George Henfrey (1867–1929) was an English footballer who played for England five times between 1891 and 1896. He started as a forward and later played as a half-back. He also played cricket for Cambridge University and Northamptonshire.
He was born in Finedon, Northamptonshire, and studied at Wellingborough School and Jesus College, Cambridge, where he earned two football Blues in 1890 and 1891.
England career:
- Debut on 7 March 1891 vs Ireland, at Wolverhampton; he scored in a 6–1 win.
- 5 March 1892 vs Wales: played up front and scored in a 2–0 win; England's 150th international goal.
- 18 March 1895 vs Wales: recalled as a half-back in an amateur England side; 1–1 draw.
- 16 March 1896 vs Wales: England won 9–1.
- 4 April 1896 vs Scotland: England lost 2–1; England's 20-game unbeaten run ended.
Overall: five caps, two goals; three wins, one draw, one defeat.
Cricket and clubs:
- One first-class appearance for Cambridge University in May 1890, scoring 17 runs.
- Northamptonshire player from 1886 to 1899; captain in 1893–1894.
Later life:
- The Times noted he later served as a Conservative councillor on Northamptonshire County Council.
