Arnold L. Bjorklund

Arnold L. Bjorklund was born on April 14, 1918, in Clinton, Washington. He joined the U.S. Army from Seattle in 1941 and rose to the rank of First Lieutenant in the 142nd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division.

On September 13, 1943, near Altavilla, Italy, he crawled under heavy fire and, with three grenades, destroyed two German machine gun nests and a mortar position. His brave actions helped his platoon advance, and he was awarded the Medal of Honor on September 6, 1944.

Bjorklund left the Army as a First Lieutenant. He died on November 28, 1979, in Vancouver, Washington, at age 61 and is buried at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
