Archdeacon of Canterbury
The Archdeacon of Canterbury is a senior church official in the Diocese of Canterbury, part of the Church of England. They oversee parishes in about a third of the diocese and are a canon at Canterbury Cathedral. The archdeacon also acts as the Archbishop of Canterbury's representative at enthronement ceremonies for new bishops in the province; at these ceremonies, they read the archbishop's mandate and guide the new bishops to their throne. This role has existed since the 11th century, with one brief split in the 12th century. In modern times, the archdeaconry was divided twice: Maidstone in 1841 and Ashford in 2011. The Archdeaconry of Canterbury covers the north-east part of the diocese and, as of 2012, includes several deaneries within the Diocese of Canterbury.
