Arcade Gamer Fubuki
Arcade Gamer Fubuki is a Japanese manga series created by Mine Yoshizaki. It ran from 1998 to 2002, spanning six volumes published by Enterbrain in Monthly Famitsu Wave. The story was adapted into a short anime (OVA) by Shaft, consisting of four episodes released between 2002 and 2003, with a special released in 2003. The first episode aired on television before the home video release. The English-language license was handled by Central Park Media under the U.S. Manga Corps line.
Set in 1984, the series follows Fubuki Sakuragasaki, a gamer whose “passion panties” grant her special gaming powers. In her winged magical girl form she wields a sword. The series includes homages to classic games like Pac-Man, Virtua Fighter, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Klonoa.
The OVA was directed by Yūji Mutō at Shaft, with writing by Ryōta Yamaguchi, character designs by Hideyuki Morioka, and music by Ryūichi Katsumata. The special episode was written by the manga’s creator, Mine Yoshizaki. Two episodes were produced with help from A.C.G.T (episode 2) and M.S.C. (episode 3). Critics have noted that the show began as a gag but became a longer, more preachy family fable, and it is considered to carry on the spirit of Game Center Arashi.
