Blaydon
Blaydon is a town in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. It sits beside the River Tyne and forms Blaydon-on-Tyne with nearby Winlaton. In 2011, Blaydon ward had about 13,900 people, and the town itself had 15,155 residents.
Blaydon’s growth came from coal mining and heavy industry. In the 18th and 19th centuries, mines and related works helped the area become an important industrial place on Tyneside. A notable nearby event is the Battle of Newburn in 1640, when Scottish forces defeated English troops at a ford on the Tyne. The town later developed with pits, brickworks, ironworks, and other industries. The South Stella Power Station provided electricity from the 1960s until 1991.
Today Blaydon is a busy community with a shopping precinct, housing regeneration, and riverside developments. Shibdon Pond is a nature reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with Shibdon Dene offering pleasant walks. Axwell Park and the historic Axwell Hall sit nearby, while Stella Hall (a 17th-century house) once stood to the north but was demolished in 1955. The area has also seen new housing at places like High View, Stella South, and Axwell Gardens.
The town has good transport links. It lies near the A695, which bypasses the town center, and sits on the Tyne Valley railway line with an hourly service between Newcastle and Hexham. Blaydon bus station, refurbished in 2009, serves Go North East buses. Newcastle International Airport is about 14 miles away.
Politically, Blaydon elects three councillors to Gateshead Council. In Parliament, the Blaydon constituency has been represented by Liz Twist (Labour) since 2017, and the area has historically been a Labour stronghold.
Blaydon is known culturally for the famous Blaydon Races song written in 1862 by George Ridley. The town also has an active sports scene: Blaydon Harriers host races, Blaydon RFC plays in the National League 2 North, and nearby clubs connect with local rugby and cycling groups. Regeneration and new housing continue to shape Blaydon’s modern character.
