Arbacoochee is an unincorporated community in Cleburne County, Alabama. It was named after a Creek Indian village called Abihkuchi, which means “a pile at the base.”

Gold was found there in 1832, and the mines produced more than $5 million. In 1845 Arbacoochee had over 5,000 residents and many amenities, including twenty stores, five saloons, a school, two churches, two hotels, mining supply shops, a fire department, a race track, and more than 100 homes. Most residents left when news of the California Gold Rush reached Alabama, and only a few families stayed.

A post office operated from 1842 to 1904. Arbacoochee first appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census as a village and as the 10th beat (precinct) of Cleburne County, making it the county’s second largest community after Edwardsville. The precinct continued to report until 1950. In 1960, the precinct was merged into the Heflin census division.
