Animal Health was a UK government executive agency that protected the health and welfare of farmed animals in Great Britain. Its main job was to put policies into action to prevent or respond to serious animal diseases. It supported farmers, safeguarded public health, and promoted animal welfare. In England and Wales, it also ensured dairy hygiene and egg production standards and it regulated the trade in endangered species under CITES. It was previously known as the State Veterinary Service. In Scotland, its work was part of SEARS (Scotland’s Environmental and Rural Services). On 1 April 2011, it merged with the Veterinary Laboratories Agency to form the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency.
