Andrew Bell (artist)
Andrew Bell (born October 27, 1978, in Guildford, England) is a British-born American artist and the founder of Dead Zebra Inc. He is best known for making collectible designer toys, but he also works in drawings, paintings, and sculptures. His work often blends humor with deeper messages. His company and toys have been featured in publications such as the New York Times, and he has published three books of drawings.
Bell started his graphic arts career as an intern at Marvel Comics while studying at the School of Visual Arts in New York. After the internship, he stayed on as a freelance designer for two more years. From 2000 to 2005, he worked as a senior designer at Nickelodeon. He left Nickelodeon in 2005 to focus on his own projects and Dead Zebra.
He has created many artworks and toys that have been shown in exhibitions around the world. In 2009, he displayed a Darth Vader helmet at The Andy Warhol Museum. Bell helped bring designer toys to a wider audience through collaborations, including a set of Android mascot vinyl figures made with Google. A Series 1 included 12 figures, plus three special editions and a DIY blank; Series 2 was released in early 2011. He also worked with MyPlasticHeart on a limited edition toy called A-Type – Rai Red Edition.
Bell’s first toy was Groob (2005). He created Kidreaper15 for Kidrobot in 2009, a glow-in-the-dark skeleton with a cloak and a scythe. Another original line is O-No Sushi, based on Japanese food.
His three drawing books are: You've Gone Too Far (a small run of 666 copies), Now You've Done It: A Collection of Creatures, and Do Not Eat! A Collection of Creatures by Andrew Bell. His work is also featured in two Paul Budnitz books, I Am Plastic and I Am Plastic Too: The Next Generation of Designer Toys.
