Amidaji Kofun Cluster

The Amidaji Kofun Cluster is a group of three late Yayoi period burial mounds in the Shimofukuda area of Kurayoshi city, Tottori Prefecture, in Japan. It was designated a National Historic Site in 1981.

The three mounds are of the Yosumi-tosshutsu-gata style, a square shape with four polygonal protrusions at the corners. This style is unique to the Kibi, San’in, and San’yō regions. Mound No. 1 is about 17.8 meters long with its protrusions, Mound No. 2 is about 8.8 meters, and Mound No. 3 is about 7.8 meters.

The slopes and protrusions were once protected by river stones (fukiishi). Archaeological excavations took place in 1979 and 1980. Yayoi pottery—both ceremonial and everyday types—was found around the protruding parts, but the burial chambers were not opened. Today the site is backfilled to preserve it, and the excavated artifacts are kept at the Kurayoshi Museum.

How to visit: it’s about a ten-minute walk from the Kamifukuda bus stop on the Hinomaru Bus from Kurayoshi Station (JR West San’in Main Line). The site has no facilities.
