American sailfin eel
American sailfin eel (Letharchus velifer), also known as the sailfin eel, is a subtropical marine eel in the worm/snake eel family Ophichthidae. It was described in 1882 by George Brown Goode and Tarleton Hoffman Bean. This eel lives in the western Atlantic Ocean, including the United States (from North Carolina to northeastern Florida) and the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, and is often found on scallop grounds. Males can reach up to 51 cm in length. Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1).
