Ahmadzai (Ghilji clan)

Ahmadzai is a Pashtun tribe in the Ghilji confederacy. They started as a subtribe of Sulaimankhel but grew to be recognized as a separate tribe. They are known as capable leaders, fighters, and for their knowledge of Pashtunwali, the traditional code of conduct.

Their homeland is in Loya Paktia, mainly in Paktia, Paktika, and Khost provinces. People with Ahmadzai heritage can also be found from Logar to Jalalabad. Because of historical deportations, small pockets live in Kunduz, Baghlan, and Balkh provinces.

Compared with other Ghilsai, Ahmadzai are politically closer to the Durrani rulers in Kabul and have held posts as military commanders and governors. Many Ghilsai tribes have opposed the central government, but Ahmadzai have varied views and have been on both sides of Afghan politics. During the Soviet-Afghan war, some Ahmadzai served in the army, while others joined the mujahideen.

Many Ahmadzai live as Kochi nomads. The main clans (khels) are Babakar khel, Isa Khel, Jabbarkhel, Maruf Khel, Musa Khel, Zandak Khel, and Ya Khel. Jabbarkhel is one of the strongest and is known as the aristocracy (khanan). A sub-group of Jabbarkhel, the Arsala khel from Hisarak district in Nangarhar, was called “resistance royalty” in the 1980s.

Ahmadzai are a Powindah tribe, traditional nomadic merchant-warriors. They are often seen as pioneers of trade among Powindah merchant tribes.

Afghan presidents Ashraf Ghani (2014–2021) and Mohammad Najibullah (1987–1992) came from the Ahmadzai tribe. Ghani later dropped his tribal name after his 2014 election.
