Ahmad Sanusi
Ahmad Sanusi (September 18, 1888 – July 31, 1950) was an Indonesian Islamic scholar, nationalist, freedom fighter, and a member of the Investigating Committee for Preparatory Work for Independence (BPUPK). He co-founded Islamic Community Unity (Persatuan Ummat Islam, PUI).
Born in Sukabumi, Dutch East Indies, Sanusi devoted himself to promoting Indonesia’s independence and Islamic education. After the Dutch–Indonesian Round Table Conference, he returned to Sukabumi and planned to join Islamic Community Unity Indonesia (PUII) with the Perikatan Ummat Islam (PUI), founded by Abdul Halim. He died in late July 1950 and was buried near the Syamsul Ulum Islamic boarding school. In 1952, PUII and PUI merged to form Islamic Community Unity.
Legacy: Ahmad Sanusi received the Mahaputera Star Class III in 1992 and Class II in 2009. He was named a National Hero of Indonesia by Presidential Decree no. 96/TK/2022 on November 3, 2022. In Sukabumi, a street and a major bus terminal are named after him. His tafsir book Raudhatul Irfan inspired the naming of a mosque in Sukabumi Regency. Halim Sanusi University in Bandung also bears his name alongside Abdul Halim.
