Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency
The Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) is a Japanese government agency under the Ministry of Defense. It was formed on October 1, 2015 to manage the development, procurement, and overall management of defense equipment for the Japan Self-Defense Forces. ATLA was created as part of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s effort to streamline Japan’s defense industry and how equipment is acquired. It combined functions from the Internal Bureau, the Technical Research and Development Institute, and the Equipment Procurement and Construction Office.
ATLA handles research and development of military technology and oversees procurement, working with universities and domestic and international industry. The agency has about 1,800 employees (roughly 1,400 civilians and 400 uniformed officers) and is led by Commissioner Atuso Suzuki. Its headquarters are in Tokyo.
