96 Medium Regiment is a unit of the Indian Army’s Regiment of Artillery. It was raised on 1 March 1964 as 96 Composite (Towed) Regiment at Haldwani under Lieutenant Colonel Swarup Singh Rai. It began as a pure South Indian Community unit and initially used 75-pounder guns. It later became a field regiment and is now a medium regiment.

The regiment’s mottoes are SARVATRA, IZZAT-O-IQBAL — “Everywhere with Honour and Glory.” Its colours are Red and Navy Blue, and its abbreviation is 96 Med Regt. The war cry is Veeran Yaar – 96!, 96!, 96! (Who is the bravest? – 96!), coined by Lieutenant Colonel (later Major General) MS Chadha AVSM.

During its service, 96 Medium Regiment was part of a Mountain Division in the Eastern Command at Dinjan, Assam, as tensions rose on the western front. 96 Field Regiment handled the task of countering Pakistani para troopers, while 962 Field Battery stayed in the Duliajan area to protect oil installations and railways. The unit’s equipment included replacements of 120 mm Brandt mortars with three 75 mm guns and twelve 75/24 Pack Howitzers.

Maj CK Pasi took part in Punjab operations in 1984. Two batteries moved to the Western sector on 3 February 1987 and one to the Southern sector on 21 February 1987 for Operation Brasstacks. The regiment also sent a contingent to the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka.

From 1990 to 1994, the regiment took part in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, followed by counter-insurgency operations in Assam from December 1994 to December 1996. It was part of a Mountain Brigade based near Tiger Hill, providing strong firepower to capture dominating heights, and it received the Chief of the Army Staff’s unit citation on 15 January 2004.

The regiment served with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the Golan Heights, Syria, during 2021–2024.
