The 2nd Garrison Division of the Nanjing Military Region traces its roots to the 85th Division, formed in February 1949 from units of the Huadong Field Army. It fought in the Chinese Civil War under the 29th Corps, and its 253rd Regiment suffered heavy losses at Kinmen. After the 29th Corps disbanded in October 1950, the division came under the Fuzhou Military Region. In May 1952 it was renamed the Sailor Infantry Division, and in December 1954 it became the Marine Division, the PLA’s first Marine Division. In February 1955 the Amphibious Tank Regiment of the Huadong Navy joined the division. In August 1957 it was reorganized as the 11th Garrison Division, stationed at Pinghu, Zhejiang. In June 1960 it absorbed the 14th Border Defense Regiment, moved to the Shanghai Security District, and was renamed the 2nd Security Division; its Amphibious Tank Regiment was detached. In 1970 it became the 2nd Garrison Division of the Nanjing Military Region, and it was disbanded in 1985.
