2023 Uzbek constitutional referendum
Uzbekistan held a constitutional referendum on 30 April 2023 to approve proposed changes to the constitution. Parliament approved the referendum on 15 March 2023.
Voters were asked: Do you accept the Constitutional Law on the Constitution of Uzbekistan?
Results
- Yes: 15,034,608 votes (90.61%)
- No: 1,558,817 votes (9.39%)
- Valid votes: 16,593,425 (99.56%)
- Invalid/blank votes: 73,672 (0.44%)
- Total votes: 16,667,097 (100%)
- Registered voters: 19,722,809
- Turnout: 84.51%
Background
The amendments would revise the current constitution. Some changes were criticized because they could allow President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to seek a third term if the amendments pass. The Constitutional Court noted this possibility, and some observers worried about the future of reforms known as the “Uzbek thaw.” This is the seventh major rewrite of the Uzbek constitution since 1992.
