Season context
- This was the 35th season of England’s top rugby competition and the fourth sponsored by Gallagher.
- It was the first time since 1992–93 that 13 teams took part. Harlequins were the defending champions from the 2020–21 season, and Saracens were promoted from the RFU Championship.
- Relegation was suspended again this season due to calendar changes and the COVID-19 pandemic, so no teams were relegated. The season ran over 40 weeks with two bye weeks per team.
- The league kept a gradual easing of salary cap rules, ahead of changes planned for 2024–25.

Play-offs
- After the regular season, the top four teams entered the play-offs: 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd, with home advantage for the higher-ranked teams.
- The two semi-final winners met in the Premiership Final at Twickenham on 18 June 2022.

Awards
- Player of the Match awards were given throughout the season, and the Premiership Rugby Awards were announced on 7 June 2022.
