2021–22 Belgian National Division 1
Belgian National Division 1, season 2021–22, was the sixth season of Belgium’s third-tier football. The previous season had been canceled, so no teams were promoted or relegated. Roeselare folded, leaving a 15-team competition.
Dender EH became champions on 25 May 2022 after winning their Promotion Play-off match at home against Dessel; RFC Liège, their other playoff rival, lost away to Knokke.
The top four teams entered the promotion play-offs. Their regular-season points were halved for the playoffs (rounded up). Starting points were: RFC Liège 25, Knokke 24, Dessel 24, Dender EH 23. Because the regular-season totals were even, no extra rounding was needed.
Only Dender EH and RFC Liège had applied for Belgian professional licenses, so only they could be promoted.
One round from the end, Liège led Dender EH by two points. A Belgian FA ruling on an earlier complaint about Liège not listing enough U21 players changed a Liège–Dender EH result from 3–0 to a 0–5 forfeit, adjusting the playoff starting points to Liège 24 and Dender EH 25.
Going into the final match, Dender EH led by one point. Liège appealed the decision, but the final match results stood; the appeal ultimately reinstated Liège’s original points.
