2019–20 Stumptown Athletic season
Stumptown Athletic’s 2019–20 season was the club’s first in the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA), a new third‑tier league in the United States. The team is based near Charlotte, North Carolina, and played home games at the CSA OrthoCarolina Sportsplex in Pineville and at the Sportsplex at Matthews, with the latter hoped to become a permanent home.
Leadership and beginnings
- President: Casey Carr
- Head coach: Mark Steffens
- The club joined NISA as one of its ten founding members for the inaugural season (announced June 28, 2019).
- First signings included Michael Binns (Jamaica international) and Jared Odenbeck.
- Hummel was announced as the official apparel and ball supplier.
Notable milestones
- In October 2019, Donald Benamna received his first international call‑up for the Central African Republic and debuted in a 2–0 friendly win.
Fall 2019 results and spring cancellation
- Fall season: Stumptown finished 2nd in the East Coast Conference and reached the conference final in the playoffs.
- Spring 2020: The season was disrupted by the COVID‑19 pandemic, and NISA canceled the spring season on April 27, 2020. Plans for the spring competition were abandoned, and the club prepared for the 2020 tournament with a second‑round entry and a scheduled first match against Charlotte Independence of the USL Championship.
Attendance and on‑field results
- Top scorers in the league were Michael Binns, Donald Benamna, and Jalen Brown, each with 2 goals.
- Highest home attendance: 963 (February 29 vs. San Diego)
- Lowest home attendance: 433 (October 25 vs. Atlanta)
- Average home attendance: about 633
- Biggest win: 3–1 vs. Atlanta on September 14
- Biggest league defeat: 0–2 vs. Miami on September 28
Overall, the 2019–20 season marked a new era for Stumptown Athletic, with a solid Fall showing, ongoing development, and the impact of the COVID‑19 pandemic curtailing the spring portion of the campaign.
