Virgin Gorda Airport
Virgin Gorda Airport (IATA: VIJ, ICAO: TUPW) is a small public airport on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. It is owned and operated by the Government of the British Virgin Islands and sits about 14 feet (4 meters) above sea level. The airport serves Spanish Town and is located at 18°26′44″N, 64°25′41″W. It has a single unpaved runway, 945 meters (3,100 feet) long, oriented 03/21, made of sand and gravel.
Over the years, Virgin Gorda has been served by several small carriers using short take-off and landing aircraft, including Twin Otters and Britten-Norman Islanders. Notable past operators include American Eagle via Executive Airlines from San Juan, Sunaire (Eastern Express) to San Juan and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Air BVI, Vieques Air Link, Air Sunshine, and Island Birds Air Charter, among others.
In 2005, the government bought the airport from Little Dix Bay Resort for about $2.9 million. The airport was closed in January 2010 for major construction, and it reopened in December 2010 with restrictions set by the ASSI regulatory agency. Today, only a small number of airlines approved by ASSI and the FAA are permitted to operate there. The runway remains unpaved.
