2016 WGC-Dell Match Play
2016 WGC-Dell Match Play recap
The 2016 WGC-Dell Match Play was the 18th edition of the event, held March 23–27 at Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas. It was the second World Golf Championship event of 2016.
Format and field
The competition started with 64 players in 16 groups of four. Each group played round-robin matches from Wednesday to Friday, with 18-hole matches. A win earned one point, a tie 0.5 points, and ties for first in a group were resolved by a sudden-death playoff if needed. The eight group winners plus the next eight best records advanced to a single-elimination knockout bracket on the weekend. Seedings were based on the Official World Golf Ranking as of March 20, 2016, with the field drawn from rankings on March 13. Henrik Stenson and Jim Furyk did not compete, allowing Patton Kizzire and Thorbjørn Olesen to enter the field.
Winner and final match
Jason Day won the championship, defeating Louis Oosthuizen 5 & 4 in the final. This marked Day’s second WGC-Match Play title in three years.
Notable context
Day’s victory helped him reclaim the world No. 1 ranking after Jordan Spieth’s upset loss in the Round of 16.
Prize money
The tournament had a total purse of $9.5 million, with the winner receiving $1,620,000.
