Ray Bales
Ray Bales (born 11 June 1951 in Norwich, England) is a former motorcycle speedway rider. He is the son of rider Billy Bales and began in cycle speedway for Tottenham Kangaroos, even representing England. His first speedway experience was with Boston in 1970, and he rode nine Division Two matches for Boston Barracudas in 1971. He became a regular for Boston in 1972–1973, helping them win the British League Division Two title and the KO Cup. He made his Division One debut with King’s Lynn Stars in 1972, was a regular in 1973, and rode there full-time from 1974 to 1976, averaging over 5 points per match. In 1977 he joined Leicester Lions but struggled, averaging below 4. He moved to the National League with Mildenhall Fen Tigers in 1978, staying until 1982, missing 1983, and returning for a final season in 1984. In 1984 he helped Mildenhall win the Fours Championship. His team honours include 1973 Division Two Champion and KO Cup Winner, 1979 National League Champion, and 1984 Fours Championship winner. He represented Young England against Sweden in 1973.
