On February 17, 2010, a big avalanche hit the village of Bagaro Serai in the Kohistan District of Pakistan. It buried at least four houses and killed about 38 people. The area had heavy snow, and roads were blocked by the avalanche and landslides, making rescue work very hard. Police and volunteers had to hike through the night to reach the village, and radio signals were weak because of the mountains. A search for people stranded was underway, and authorities asked for a helicopter and heavy machinery to help. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani expressed sorrow for the loss and ordered officials to speed up the rescue and safe evacuation.
