The 2009 Primera División season in Chile was the 78th edition of the top-flight football league. The competition was split into two championships, Apertura (opening) and Clausura (closing). The number of teams was reduced from 20 to 18 this season.

Format and teams
- The season used a single Classification Stage, with the top eight teams advancing to the playoff rounds. Groups were no longer used to decide advancement.
- Relegation was decided by an aggregate table from both the Apertura and Clausura. The 17th and 18th teams were automatically relegated to the Primera B. The 15th and 16th placed teams faced relegation/promotion playoffs against two teams from the 2009 Primera B: Palestino vs San Marcos de Arica, and Curicó Unido vs San Luis. The team with the most points over two legs stayed in or was promoted to the Primera División.
- Relegated last season and new teams: Antofagasta, Osorno, Melipilla, and Deportes Concepción were relegated to Primera B; Municipal Iquique and Curicó Unido were promoted to replace them.
