The Joanna Briggs Institute
JBI, now simply called JBI, is a global research organization that creates evidence-based information, software, education, and training to improve healthcare and patient outcomes. It works with universities and hospitals worldwide through the JBI Collaboration, the largest effort to bring evidence-based care into everyday practice.
Based in Adelaide, Australia, JBI shortened its name in 2020. Its headquarters sit within the School of Public Health, College of Health, at the University of Adelaide.
JBI’s approach combines the best available evidence with the care setting, the individual patient, and the clinician’s judgment. It views evidence-based healthcare as a cycle: identify needs, generate useful evidence, apply it in practice, and adapt it for different cultures and settings.
The JBI Model of Evidence-based Healthcare (developed in 2005 and updated in 2016) uses a simple diagram. The inner circle represents knowledge; inner wedges show the steps to apply evidence in clinical decision-making. Outer wedges show practical actions, and arrows indicate that the process can move back and forth.
JBI develops resources and tools to help put evidence into practice. These include the JBI Evidence Implementation Manual, the JBI Evidence Synthesis Manual, and Critical Appraisal Tools, plus software like SUMARI. While its early work focused on nursing, JBI now supports all health disciplines, including allied health, medicine, and public health.
JBI was established in 1996 by the Royal Adelaide Hospital and the University of Adelaide, and it is named after Joanna Briggs, the hospital’s first matron.
