The 2004–05 season was Luton Town’s 119th season in their history and their 84th in the Football League. They finished as champions of League One (the rebranded Second Division), winning the title with 98 points and earning promotion to the Championship. It was Luton's first time back in the second tier since 1981–82. The team achieved this with a modest squad rebuilding, relying on existing players, the loan market, and their strong youth system. A solid defense, led by Curtis Davies, plus the steady leadership of captain Kevin Nicholls, helped them let in the fewest goals in the division. The side also gained a reputation for scoring late goals, with many of their 87 league goals coming in the final ten minutes.

The season followed a troubled period for the club. After a costly administration in 2003–04, which prevented many signings, businessman Bill Tomlins completed his takeover on 12 May 2004, securing the club’s future. Manager Mike Newell worked to keep key players and contracts in place, including defenders Chris Coyne and Russell Perrett, midfielders Paul Hughes, Michael Leary and Steve Robinson, and several youth graduates. Adrian Forbes left for Swansea, while goalkeeper Marlon Beresford returned to Luton's fold. Dino Seremet was brought in as goalkeeper, and Rowan Vine arrived on loan to bolster the attack.

Luton began the campaign strongly, winning their first three league games and moving to the top of the table. They enjoyed periods of excellent form, with several players earning individual praise. Steve Howard emerged as the club’s top scorer, and Keith Keane, a product of Luton's youth system, stepped up in the early season. By October and November the team remained near the top, with Curtis Davies winning the League One Player of the Month award for November and David Bayliss and Ian Hillier going on loan to Chester City at the end of December.

Luton's FA Cup campaign saw them beat Wycombe Wanderers to reach the third round, but they were knocked out by Brentford in January. In the League Cup, they were eliminated by Boston United in October. Smithing through winter, the team kept in first place as Hull City closed in on the table, and Warren Feeney joined the club in March.

April was a pivotal month. Luton won all their league games, extending their lead and sealing promotion with several matches to spare. Chris Coyne won the League One Player of the Month award, while Mike Newell earned his second Manager of the Month award of the season. Six Luton players were named in the League One Team of the Year: goalkeeper Marlon Beresford; defenders Curtis Davies and Chris Coyne; midfielders Kevin Nicholls and Ahmet Brković; and top scorer Steve Howard. Curtis Davies was also named the overall League One Player of the Year.

After the season, it was announced that Wrexham winger Carlos Edwards would join Luton on a free transfer in July 2005. Steve Howard signed a new two-year contract, while other players extended their deals or departed. The season ended with a 3–3 draw against Doncaster Rovers on 7 May, a competitive and fitting finale to Luton's championship campaign.
