On November 5, 2002, Tennessee voters elected 17 of the 33 State Senate seats. The primary was on August 1, 2002. Before the election, Democrats held 18 seats and Republicans held 15; after the election, the same numbers remained—Democrats 18 and Republicans 15—so there was no net change and Democrats kept control of the Senate.

Key leaders were:
- Democratic Leader and Speaker: John Shelton Wilder (26th district)
- Republican Leader: Ron Ramsey (4th district)

Two Republican incumbents did not run for re-election in 2002.

Across all races, the statewide popular vote favored Republicans (about 54.27% to 44.04%), but the seat distribution stayed the same. Some races were decided by narrow margins.
