2002 AFC U-17 Championship
The 2002 AFC U-17 Championship was the 10th edition of the tournament, held in the United Arab Emirates from 6 to 22 September. Twelve teams competed.
South Korea won the title, their second, after beating Yemen in the final. China finished third and Uzbekistan fourth.
In total, 26 matches were played and 77 goals were scored (about 2.96 per game). The best player was Cha Gi-suk.
Background note: In May 2001, 16 players were banned from international football for two years after X-ray tests suggested they were at least 19 years old. Among the teams involved, Thailand had two affected players; Nepal did not allow testing. These teams were banned from the 2002 championship.
Format: In the group stage, the top two teams from each group, plus the two best third-placed teams, advanced to the knockout rounds.
