On October 12, 1995, at Blackville–Hilda High School in Blackville, South Carolina, 16-year-old Anthony Sincino, who had been suspended, returned to the school with a .32 caliber revolver and opened fire in a math classroom. He first shot teacher Johnny Thompson, who died, then shot Phyllis Senn in the teachers’ work room; Senn died from the gunshot. A student in the hall said Sincino did not look angry, only unsure of what he was doing. Sincino killed himself outside the school office. The attack killed two teachers and injured one student; Sincino’s body was found after the suicide.

Sincino was African American and the teachers were white. Some people speculated the motive was racial bias, a view echoed by Sincino’s mother, who blamed institutional racism. Sincino had a history of disciplinary problems, including expulsions in 1994 and after being readmitted in 1995. The incident sparked ongoing discussion about school discipline and race.
