1992 Labour Party Shadow Cabinet election
Elections for the Labour Party's Shadow Cabinet were held in July 1992. They usually take place at the start of a new parliamentary session, but this vote was delayed until a new leader was chosen to replace Neil Kinnock. Under the rules at the time, the 18 MPs in the Parliamentary Labour Party with the most votes won places in the Shadow Cabinet, and these 18 were then given specific roles by the leader. The PLP MPs also elected the Chief Whip, and Labour peers elected the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords. The Leader of the Labour Party and Deputy Leader (John Smith and Margaret Beckett) were members by virtue of those offices. A rule guaranteed that the three women with the most votes would be included in the 18, even if they were not among the top 18 by votes alone. Some positions tied.
