1968 in Ireland was a year of rising tension, especially in Northern Ireland. Civil rights protests calling for fair treatment for Catholics grew, and some marches and clashes with police occurred. The country edged toward the more difficult period that would become known as the Troubles. In the Republic of Ireland, life continued with ongoing economic and political issues, but there were no major constitutional changes that year. People kept up with work, school, sport, and culture.
