1952 Úrvalsdeild karla
1952 Icelandic Basketball Tournament
The 1952 season was the first edition of Iceland’s top men’s basketball league. The tournament ran from April 21 to April 29, 1952, with five teams competing in a single round-robin (each team played four games, for a total of 10 games). ÍKF won the inaugural championship with the best record, while ÍR finished as runners-up.
ÍKF benefited from its proximity to the Naval Air Station Keflavík, which allowed them to regularly play against American players with college and high school experience. They were coached by American sailors Gene Crowley and John Wahl. ÍKF won all four of their games, averaging 10.8 points per game.
The league’s top scorer was Gunnar Bjarnason. The highest-scoring game on record was Ármann 36–43 ÍS on April 21, 1952.
Five teams competed, and the national championship was decided by the best record after the round-robin. In 1978, the league was renamed Úrvalsdeild karla.
