The 1947 NFL season ended with a tie in the Eastern Division between the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers, both at 8-4. Because of the tie, they played a one-game playoff. In the regular season, the Steelers beat the Eagles on October 19 by 11 points, and the Eagles won 21–0 on November 30 at Shibe Park.

Philadelphia then beat Green Bay on December 14 by 14 points to force the playoff. The division playoff was held December 21 at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, and the Eagles won 21–0 to claim the East and earn a trip to the NFL Championship.

The NFL Championship was played at Comiskey Park in Chicago on December 28 (moved back from December 21 to accommodate the playoff). The Chicago Cardinals defeated the Eagles to win their second title. The defending champions Chicago Bears did not qualify.

This playoff marked the Eagles–Steelers’ first postseason meeting, and was the first postseason matchup between two Pennsylvania-based teams.
